GEA's Track & Field programs typically start in late March and continue thru to July/August each year. A wide variety of programs are offered for all age groups (6 - 19) providing an opportunity for young athletes to run and train throughout the year in an organized setting. We welcome any level of running, jumping or throwing ability.

The Prgrams currently offered are as follows :

2012 Programs

  • Junior Development (Ages 9-13) - April 9th to July 26th
  • High School (Ages 14-19) - February 27th to July 26th

Track Rascals ( Age: 6-8)

General Program Description
The Track Rascals programs are all 6 weeks in duration. Athletes are given instruction on all basic motor skills through running, jumping and throwing with an emphasis on fun and play.

The fundamental motor skills of running, jumping, throwing (RJT), twisting, kicking, throwing and catching are taught through active movement combined with well-structured games and play designed to develop agility, balance, coordination and speed for athleticism. There is an emphasis on flexibility to develop and/or maintain an optimal range of motion in combination with the introduction of whole body strength.

Practice Sessions
Typically two times per week.

Competitions
Athletes are not formally able to compete at any competitions, however there are usually several meets throughout the year where unofficial events for the Track Rascals are held. Please talk to a coach or the club manager for more details.

Junior Development Programs ( Age: 9-13)

General Program Description
The Junior Development Program is a multilateral program which develops fundamental movement skills and coordination, and lays the foundation for the future. The program introduces youth between the ages of 9 and 13 to physical fitness through basic track and field events, encouraging them to be the best they possibly can be. There are no attendance rules for practices or track meets as athletes are encouraged to have fun and participate as often as they choose. There is no event specialization at this age and athletes are encouraged to participate and learn a variety of skills and events such events as: Hurdles, Javelin, Pole vault long Jump, Hammer, Discus Steeple Chase, and all the regular running and jumping events.

With the emphasis being on fun and fundamentals, this Track and Field program introduces basic athletic skills of running, jumping and throwing. Participants will be exposed to a variety of Track & Field events and experiences that will enhance their athleticism and provide a solid foundation for future specialization.

Coach to Athlete ratio is kept low to ensure quality instruction. GEA is proud to offer a Run, Jump, Throw curriculum to athletes of this group that has been certified by both Athletics Canada, and the IAAF. Athletes learn different movement patterns that translate into track and field events. This broad based approach ensures that the athletes experience personal levels of success while learning track and field fundamentals.

Practices
Typically held three times per week with competitions scheduled on the weekends.

High School Midget (Age 14-15)

General Program Description
The Development Program is for athletes 14 to 15 years of age. Practices are offered 3-4 days a week. Athletes are given the opportunity to focus more on the disciplines they choose, however younger athletes are encouraged to still participate in a variety of events.

In this crucial stage of learning, athletes are exposed to all event areas of track & field. A broad based skill development program centres on the teaching of specific skills and running mechanics, as well as introductory core strength and weight bearing exercises. As athletes progress thru their training programs, an increased level of specialization can begin with more intense training when and if appropriate.

Practices
Typically held three times per week with competitions scheduled on the weekends.
