GEA Awarded Legacy Funding
GEA along with thirteen local non-profit sport, recreation and community organizations received funding for infrastructure, equipment, and training. The projects selected by the Legacy Funding Committee will have a lasting impact on sport and community wellness.
“Although our Games did not take place, our team is proud to leave Maple Ridge in better shape than when we started,” said Tom Bowen, vice president of the 2020 BC Summer Games and Legacy Funding Committee Chair. “We are excited to see these legacies come to life in the coming years.”
“Sporting events are known for bringing people together, fostering community connections and generating significant economic opportunities,” said Lisa Beare, MLA for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows. “These grants put Maple Ridge on the map as a sport event destination as it prepares to host the Summer Games in 2024. Congratulations to all of the recipients.”
The BC Games are held every two years. Greater Vernon will host the 2022 BC Winter Games and the 2022 BC Summer Games will take place in Prince George.
My New Life at New Mexico Highlands
My first semester and New Mexico Highlands University has been incredible experience. Before coming to Highlands, I feared the possibility of not fitting in or not being able to make friends as easily in the past. So far, I have met so many hardworking and driven individuals who motivate and push me to work even harder each day. They also happen to be the same people who made my transition into a new place fairly easy. The friends that I have made taught me a great deal about being a student athlete such as the obstacles I will face in the future as well as the benefits that will make it worth it in the end.
The coaches here at Highlands have also pushed me to best of my ability since day one. I have learned a tremendous amount from them in such short period of time which I did not think was possible. They taught me a great deal of lessons that I not only use to towards track now, but life in general. I know that I will continue to learn new and greater things that will help me towards my track and field career and better myself as an individual.
Balancing classes with a strict training schedule was definitely a challenge but it was a challenge that I was able to overcome very quickly. I made sure to surround myself in an atmosphere that would only create success for my future and a healthy mindset each day. I am excited to see what new challenges I will face, the friends I will make and the new things I will learn about myself this upcoming semester.

With COVID restrictions, our main focus has been keeping our GEA family safe while training. As the winter months closed in, it was evident that to continue our winter training program, we were going to need somewhere that was warm and dry while not extending our bubble. It was at this time that Mark and Jenn McClure offered the use of their gym facility to our athletes exclusively. This generous offer was gladly accepted and GEA would like to thank both Mark and Jenn for their support of our club.
I would enourage all our GEA families who are looking for a locally owned, small and friendly gym to check them out by clicking on the Athlete's Arena image above.
